Superb article backed by facts. I worked in big pharma for 15 years in manufacturing and quality. There are many good people there for the right reasons, but it just takes a small group of corrupt leaders at each company. That is the problem really, the leadership and the drug development process. We need to be skeptical and we need an overhaul soon.

Reminds me of the lies from pharma about Librium, and then Valium being “non-addictive” alternatives to treatment of alcoholism (!) no less. As if benzodiazepines are somehow “minor tranquilizers” - nothing minor about them.
Thank you for this powerful reminder about this endemic corruption across our corrupt big Pharma, congress (surprise!) and the FDA! Some watchdogs indeed. A major house cleaning (pun intended and not) is in order, starting in November and Jan ‘23. We can only hope.

Thank you, Rebecca (and Dr Aaron). The personal angle in your story hooked me and I look forward to reading part 2. My daughter is training to be a doctor and has agreed to read this article if I print it out (makes a change from looking at a screen.) I pray that she and others will return us to more humane and ethical practices in medicine. Meantime I use a nurse practitioner whenever I can (I assume they are not targeted by pharmaceutical companies to the same degree) and am becoming more open to alternative medicine. However, when something "big" hits, (like happened to the author's mother), we're back in the hands of who knows who with who knows what ethical compass. Though they can kill the body thankfully they cannot kill the soul. Articles like this, and heroic leadership like that of Dr Kheriaty and others, are perhaps leading to an awakening of significance.

What is really sad is that pharma started out truly saving lives. My son is a type-1 diabetic, which means his pancreas does not function and he must rely on insulin to live. It was discovered back in the 1920's, Eli Lilly manufactured the first insulin and people who developed type-1 didn't die anymore. It was and is lifesaving. These companies have lost their way.
